The symposium is organised by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Visualization has played an enabling role in the development of our understanding of the universe by providing tools for both understanding and communication. The field is continuously developing as a consequence of data challenges in terms of size and complexity of data from observations and simulations, and standard visualization tools are not providing the capabilities needed. This makes it necessary to build a bridge between developers of visualization and researchers in astronomy. In this seminar, we will explore the role of images and visualization in several use cases and the cross fertilization of these different domains both for research and science communication.
We plan a 2-day seminar that will focus on the current research in the areas of interaction and real-time visualization, naturalistic and convincing visual presentation, immersive techniques, visual storytelling and science education, big-data analysis, simulation science, and how these topics relate to exploration and explanation in the astrodomain. We have invited leading experts coming from a cross-section of computer science research communities and astronomy and astrophysicists as well as solar system exploration.

- Juna Kollmeier, Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Canada and Sloan Digital Sky Survey, on Visualizing the Heavens: The Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
- Ronan Modolo, LATMOS, Paris, France, on A scenic tour of the jovian system and its icy moons by the JUICE mission.
- Dylan Nelson, Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Germany, on Visualizing the Virtual Universe.
- Mark Subbarao, NASA Scientific Visualization Studio, USA, on Astrovisualization at NASA.
