Description
Access to energy is essential for development, with direct effects on education, public health and economic growth. The aim of the workshop is to identify how the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences can play a role for future development of energy systems at the village-level in Africa. Local Academies of Sciences can also play an essential role in identifying key local stakeholders for the implementation of the most appropriate energy systems considering technical, social and business aspects, as well as persuading the politicians in developing countries to prioritize electrification and energy supply to villages.
This workshop will bring together some prominent researchers in this field from Kenya, Tanzania and Sweden, as well as from other European science academies. On 10 September, various aspects of electrification at the village level will be presented, not only concentrating on technical solutions, but also on delivery and business models, and on social and political aspects. The arrangements on 11 September are only open for invited guests since the specialists will work in smaller groups, to discuss these various aspects and to define the way forward for the possible contributions of the Academy. A detailed program will be availible at this site in due time.
The workshop is organized by the Energy Committee, the Swedish Secretariat for Environmental Earth System Sciences (SSEESS) and the International Science Programme at Uppsala University.
The symposium is free of charge and open to the public but registration is required. Please note that registration is binding. The seminars will be given in English. Detailed programme can be downloaded from the menu on the right.
